Obama urges Congress to act to help economy

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) – President Barack Obama on Tuesday called on Congress to replicate its recent passage of the payroll tax cut extension by passing more bipartisan legislation to help the economy without getting distracted by the coming fall presidential election. “There is a lot more we can do, and there is plenty of time to do it,” Obama said during an event at the White House. He said Congress should take up other parts of his agenda, and mentioned specifically a proposal that would help more homeowners refinance underwater mortgages and a separate plan to small companies export. In addition, Obama said Congress should pass the so-called ‘Buffett rule’ to make sure that Americans with over million in annual income pay a 30% tax rate. Obama said the White House would continue to try to find ways to help the economy that don’t require congressional action. “Instead of spending the coming months in a lot of phony political debates, [and] focusing on the next election, I hope that we spend some time focusing on middle-class Americans,” Obama said.

Grammy telecast gets biggest audience since 1984

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — The Sunday night CBS telecast of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards drew nearly 40 million viewers, the biggest audience for the ceremony since 1984, the network said Monday afternoon. From 8:00-11:33 p.m. Eastern time, broadcast posted a 21.7 rating and 33 share, according to Nielsen data. The Grammys were clearly impacted by the death of singer Whitney Houston on Saturday, which lent a significant degree of emotion to the proceedings. Over 46 million homes and 82.6 million viewers tuned in to all or part of the show — all-time highs for a live Grammy broadcast.
